How to get Akismet / WordPress API key?…Free Only

Every day bloggers have deal with a lot of spams, including highly unrelated trackbacks. Good thing there's Akismet. It's a WordPress plugin which identifies and blocks comment and trackback spam on blogs with integration to various blogging systems.

However, before you can get to activate it, you will need to enter the Akismet API Key. Getting them usually costs $50 per month for an Enterprise Plan, $5 per month for a Pro (single-site access). However, for Personal Blogs (non-business), you can get it for $0-$120 per year. Below are two ways to get the Akismet key for free!

1. Create a WordPress.com Blog

Creating a WordPress.com Blog or you can use your old account if you have one already.
Login to the blog
After successful login, open a new tab and browse : http://apikey.wordpress.com/
This page will show your API Key along with your username. You can use this API key to activate Akismet Plugin in any other self-hosted WordPress Blog.

2. Sign up for Personal Account

Go to the official Akismet Website and find the SignUp page.
Click on the "SignUp" button in the personal Category.
Click on the "Continue" button.
Done. You will receive your personal API key via Email.

That's it! Enjoy your free Akistmet key and a spam-free blog!
