Ancient Aliens (New Series)

Premieres Sunday 9pm, 6 February 2011 Astro 575

ANCIENT ALIENS examines 75 million years of the most credible alien evidence here on Earth, from the age of the dinosaurs, to ancient Egypt, to the skies over the western desert in the present day US. Ancient cave drawings of strange creatures, an asphalt-like substance in an Egyptian pyramid made from the remains of unidentified creatures, continued mass sightings in the USA — these are just a few of the strange stories that will be investigated.

Ancient Aliens1

The Visitor, 6 Feb
If ancient aliens visited Earth, who were they, and where did they come from? Possible historic evidence and beliefs are examined around the world. The Dogon people possess knowledge of a galaxy they claim was given to them by a star god named Amma. The Hopi and Zuni people celebrate Kachinas, gods from the sky, whose headdresses and costumes appear to resemble modern helmets and protective clothing. Halfway around the world, Chinese legends tell of the Han leader, Huangdi, arriving on Earth on a flying, yellow dragon. Was this dragon more likely a spacecraft? Ancient astronaut theorists believe that these are far from chance encounters and that extraterrestrials not only interacted with us, but changed the course of human history.

The Mission, 13 Feb
If ancient aliens visited Earth, what was their mission, and is there evidence that points to when they will return? Ancient Sumerian tablets describe an alien race, known as the Anunnaki, who came to Earth to mine for gold. Egyptian hieroglyphs depict hybrid creatures that were part man, part animal. Mysterious crop circles and unexplainable crystal skulls are thought to contain messages that man has yet to decipher. Strange evidence may exist in multiple cultures throughout history suggesting that aliens came here to explore, excavate raw materials, experiment on human beings, and even for pure conquest.

The Evidence, 20 Feb
If ancient aliens visited Earth, what was their legacy, and did they leave behind clues that exist in plain sight such as sophisticated aircraft, complex electrical grids, and intricate construction machinery? Indian Sanskrit texts, dating back to 6000 B.C., describe in varying but vivid detail flying machines called Vimanas. Megalithic stone structures in Egypt reveal evidence of precision saw work. Interpretations of the Jewish Zohar writings offer depictions of a life-sustaining manna machine, eerily similar to chlorella algae processing systems today. Are these examples of modern technology, or is there evidence that these incredible mechanisms existed on Earth thousands of years ago?

Close Encounter, 27 Feb
Reports of encounters with strange beings and sightings of mysterious objects in the sky have occurred throughout history. A 13th century historical book, Otia Imperialia, includes an account of a creature descending from a flying craft over Bristol, England. The log from Christopher Columbus' first voyage to America contains a report of strange lights in the sky. Medieval art pieces depict disc-shaped objects floating in the heavens. Sightings of flying cigar-shaped crafts were reported during the Black Plague. And there were even discussions of extraterrestrial life among America's Founding Fathers. Could these sightings, coming from every part of the world, from biblical times to present day, be evidence that aliens have been with us all along?

This program is available in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese subtitles.

    History Asia’s Monarchies New Series

History Asia: Asia's Monarchies (New Series)
    Premieres Sunday 10pm, starts 6 February 2011

ASIA'S MONARCHIES are all unique, but there is one thing they all share in common all are at a fascinating point in their various histories. In this four-part series we journey to the heart of these beautiful lands to understand the relationship between the people and their monarchs. To many, their monarchy is an anachronism an institution that hampers progression. To others it is the heart and soul of their nation, part of their shared history and a guard against the dangers of modernity.

    Japan, 6 Feb
The Japanese Imperial family is the oldest hereditary monarchy in the world. The family's lineage dates back to the sixth century BC, though the title of Tenno (emperor) or Sumera-Mikoto (heavenly sovereign) was assumed by rulers in the sixth or seventh century and has been used since. However, its central role in the long history of the Japanese nation has not stopped it being mired in controversy over the last few years – not so much because of their personal actions, but rather by the vagaries of the royal hereditary system – and their own biology.

For centuries, men have ascended to Japan's imperial throne, one of the world's oldest hereditary monarchies. Eight women reigned as empresses but never bore heirs, so the Chrysanthemum Throne always reverted to an unbroken male line. Although the role of the Monarchy is not – currently – under threat, the issue of gender has led to a soul-searching in the Japanese people as to the essential role of a purely ceremonial monarchy in a very modern nation.

The relationship between the people and the Monarchy was irrevocably changed after the end of WWII, when it had its 'divine' nature stripped. What is left if every tradition is deemed changeable?

    Bhutan, 13 Feb
Bhutan's soon-to-be governing party pledged recently to follow the policies of the absolute monarchy it is replacing, after it won a landslide in this once-reclusive Himalayan kingdom's first parliamentary elections. So it goes in Bhutan, possibly the first country in history where a king had to convince his people that democracy was a good idea. Anyhow, in a country that counts the nation's health not by an economic index, but by a Gross Happiness Index – perhaps not much is surprising.

This remote, beautiful country truly is in the throes of a noble experiment. What makes this experiment rather unique is that – unlike the American War of Independence and the French Revolution, where the common people were forced to do battle against autocratic rulers – this move towards democracy has been initiated by the ruling monarch himself.

Can this tiny country keep its autonomy in the face of encroaching influence from outside? Their struggle to maintain their own sense of nationality as they try to contain the effect of the thousands of Nepalese who have migrated there has drawn outcry from other countries – accusing them of discrimination as they immigrants are denied certain rights. What does the future hold for a small country in the midst of the roaring Tiger and Dragon economies?

    Cambodia, 20 Feb
King Sihanouk 'retired' in 2004, giving way to his son, Sihamoni – a ballet dancer. Unlike many monarchies, Cambodia's is not hereditary – rather the next monarch is chosen by the National Assembly from a pool of eligible candidates. When Sihamoni was chosen, what sort of monarch were they hoping to crown?

This program is available in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese subtitles.
